Setup guide
This guide takes a new Foundry store from install to launch. Each step names where the setting is in the theme editor (Online Store → Themes → Customize).
1. Pick a theme style
Foundry comes with three styles. Each sets fonts, colors, corner radius and card shape together:
| Style | Made for | Fonts | Look |
|---|---|---|---|
| Foundry | Food and drink | Work Sans | Roasted browns and cream, Price tag cards, square heading mark, bold accent bar under the header |
| Foundry Temper | Sportswear | Montserrat, uppercase headings | Black, red and volt yellow, square corners, Framed portrait cards, slash heading mark |
| Foundry Quench | Health and beauty | Lora headings, Karla body | Blush and plum, rounded corners, square cards, underlined headings, centered logo |
Change style in Theme settings → Theme style. Switching style replaces your font, color and shape settings, so pick a style first and fine-tune afterwards.
2. Set colors and type
- Theme settings → Colors: Foundry has five color schemes. Scheme 1 is the page default; every section and group block has a Color scheme setting to use another. Each scheme has background, text, accent, button, button label and border colors. The accent color is used for small text such as subheadings, so keep it readable on the background (a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1; the default schemes meet this).
- Theme settings → Typography: heading and body fonts, body text size, heading size and heading letter case.
- Theme settings → Layout: page width and margin, space between sections, button corner radius and product card options.
See Theme settings for every option.
3. Header, announcement bar and footer
- Open the Header section and upload your logo. Set Logo width. Without a logo, the store name is shown.
- Choose the Menu (Online Store → Navigation). Menus support three levels. Pick Dropdown or Mega menu as the desktop menu style. With the mega menu, add Menu promo blocks and type the top-level menu item’s title in Menu item to show an image promo under it.
- Choose Sticky header: Off, Always, or When scrolling up.
- Add announcements in the Announcement bar section above the header. Each announcement can have Show from and Show until dates (
YYYY-MM-DD, in the store’s time zone). - In the Footer section, choose a footer menu and turn payment icons, Follow on Shop and the country/language selectors on or off. Selectors only show when the store sells to several countries (Settings → Markets) or has several published languages (Settings → Languages).
4. Home page
The default home page has a hero banner, featured collection, promo tiles and rich text. Add, remove and reorder sections from the left sidebar. The section library includes a slideshow, image with text, video, multicolumn, testimonials, logo list, collapsible content (FAQ), image hotspots, before/after slider, newsletter, countdown and more.
Tips:
- Use one hero banner or slideshow at the top. The first one on the page uses the page’s main heading and loads its image first.
- Give every image alt text in Content → Files or on the product media.
- Keep the slideshow’s Auto-rotate off unless you need it. Shoppers can pause it, and it never rotates for shoppers who turn on reduced motion.
5. Product page
The product page is built from blocks in the Product section: title, price, variant picker, buy buttons, description, tabs, trust badges, stock counter, size chart, delivery estimate, collapsible rows, volume pricing and app blocks. Drag blocks to reorder them. See Product page.
Turn on the extras you want:
- Variant swatches: set colors or images on product options in the Shopify admin, then choose Circle or Square swatches in the Variant picker block.
- Pickup availability: set up local pickup in Settings → Shipping and delivery.
- Back-in-stock alerts: on by default in the Buy buttons block. See Back-in-stock alerts.
- Product recommendations and Recently viewed sections under the product section. Complementary products are set in the Search & Discovery app.
- Product bundles: see Product bundles.
6. Collections and search
In the Collection and Search sections choose filtering, sorting, quick add and pagination (page numbers, a Load more button or infinite scroll). Filters are set up in the Search & Discovery app; set a filter’s display to Swatch there to show color or image swatches.
7. Cart
Theme settings → Cart controls the cart drawer and cart page features:
- Gift wrapping and cart notes
- Floating cart button and the scroll distance before it shows
- Free-shipping progress bar and its threshold, entered in cents (5000 = 50.00 in your store currency)
- Cart and product page upsells, with global product lists that sections can override
- Show “Sign in” in the cart for signed-out shoppers
Accelerated checkout buttons (Shop Pay, Apple Pay and others) show on the cart page when they’re enabled in Settings → Payments.
8. Marketing features
- Promo popup section: delay, scroll-depth or exit-intent trigger, with a frequency limit. Use Always only while testing.
- Age verifier section: simple confirmation or date of birth, with a minimum age and a decline link. Turn it on in Theme settings → Features → Age verification.
- Countdown section: enter the end time as
2026-12-31T23:59:59Z(UTC). - Newsletter section: sign-ups become customers with email marketing consent.
9. Languages and international
Foundry includes English, French, Italian, German and Spanish. Publish languages in Settings → Languages. Right-to-left languages such as Arabic and Hebrew mirror the layout automatically. Edit any storefront text in Online Store → Themes → … → Edit default theme content.
10. Before you launch

Theme style
Switches between the Foundry, Foundry Temper and Foundry Quench presets. A style sets fonts, heading size and case, heading mark, corner radius, card style and image shape, and the five color schemes. Each style also comes with its own header and footer layout. See the setup guide.

Colors
Five color schemes. Scheme 1 is the page default; every section and group block can use another. Each scheme has:
| Color | Used for |
|---|---|
| Background | Section background |
| Text | Body text and headings |
| Accent | Small highlighted text (subheadings, volume pricing note), star ratings and custom badges |
| Button | Primary button background |
| Button label | Primary button text |
| Border | Lines, inputs and outlines |
Keep text, accent and button label colors readable on their backgrounds (contrast of at least 4.5:1). Every default scheme in every style meets this.
Input corner radius rounds text fields and selects.
Animations
| Setting | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Reveal sections on scroll | On | Sections fade in as they scroll into view. The first section is never hidden, and nothing is hidden without JavaScript. |
| Hover effects on cards and images | On | Subtle zoom and lift on hover. |
All animations, the slideshow and announcement rotation, and smooth scrolling turn off for shoppers whose device is set to reduce motion.
Favicon
Upload a square .png, at least 32 × 32 px. It’s used as the browser tab icon and, at 180 × 180 px, as the icon when shoppers save the store to their home screen.
Social media
Paste the full address of each profile (for example https://instagram.com/yourstore). Each network with a link gets an icon in the footer; leave a field empty to hide it. Turn the icons off in the Footer section with Show social media icons. The X (Twitter) handle is also added to link previews shared on X.
Sections
Add sections from the theme editor sidebar with Add section. Most sections can go on any page; exceptions are noted.
Settings every section shares
Content sections end with a Section style group:
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Color scheme | One of the five schemes from Theme settings → Colors |
| Top padding, Bottom padding | Space inside the section, in pixels |
| Hide on mobile, Hide on desktop | Hides the section below or above 750 px wide |
The header, footer and announcement bar only have Color scheme.
Header and footer
Announcement bar
Sits above the header. Add Announcement blocks: text, optional link, and optional Show from / Show until dates (YYYY-MM-DD, store time zone). Dated announcements are hidden outside their dates, even on cached pages. Rotate announcements cycles through them every few seconds (Change every); shoppers can pause rotation, and it never rotates for shoppers who prefer reduced motion.
Header
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Logo, Logo width | Your logo. Without one, the store name is shown. |
| Logo position | Left, or Center with the main menu on its own row below (desktop). |
| Bottom border | None, Thin (border color) or Bold (a 4 px bar in the accent color). |
| Sticky header | Off, Always, or When scrolling up. |
| Main menu | Up to three levels. Second-level links open in a dropdown or mega menu. |
| Desktop menu style | Dropdown, or Mega menu (full-width panel with columns). |
| Customer account menu | Menu shown in the account dropdown. |
| Show search, Show live results | Search in the header, with predictive results (products, collections, pages, articles, suggestions). |
| Country/region and language selectors | Shown when the store sells to more than one country or has more than one language. |
Menu promo blocks add an image promo to the mega menu. Type the title of the top-level menu link (for example Shop) in Menu item.
Footer
Build the footer columns from up to six blocks:
| Block | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Brand | Logo (or the store name), a short text and social media icons. One per footer. |
| Menu | A heading and a menu. Add one per column. |
| Text | A heading and rich text, for example opening hours. |
| Email signup | A heading, text and an email field. Sign-ups are added to your customers with email marketing consent. One per footer. |
The bottom bar shows the copyright, country/region and language selectors, Follow on Shop (requires Shop Pay) and payment icons. Without blocks, the footer shows the Footer menu setting as one column. Social media links are set in Theme settings → Social media.

Add Field blocks for extra questions: text, phone, number, date, long text, dropdown (one option per line) or checkbox, required or optional, half or full width. Answers appear in the contact email under each field’s label. Shopify doesn’t keep custom answers after a failed submission, so keep required fields to a minimum. Use the page.contact template for your contact page.
Other pages
Article, blog, page, 404 and password sections only have Section style.
Pop-ups
| Section | Key settings |
|---|---|
| Promo popup | Enable, heading, message, image, button, trigger (time delay, scroll depth, exit intent on desktop), frequency (always — for testing only — once per session, day or week). Doesn’t open over the age verifier. |
| Age verifier | Simple confirmation or date picker, minimum age, texts, decline button and redirect. Turn on Theme settings → Features → Age verification. Shoppers can’t close it without answering; the choice is remembered in their browser. |
Theme blocks
Theme blocks build custom layouts inside the Custom section (and the blocks presets Image with text (blocks) and FAQ (blocks)). Blocks can be nested: a group can hold other groups.
| Block | Settings |
|---|---|
| Group | Layout direction (horizontal or vertical), alignment, padding, equal-width columns, space between blocks, stack on mobile, color scheme (empty uses the section’s colors). Holds any blocks. |
| Heading | Text, size (H1–H4), alignment. Use one H1 per page, and don’t skip levels. |
| Text | Text, style (title, subtitle, normal), alignment |

| Divider | A horizontal line |
| Accordion | Heading, open by default. Holds any blocks; opens and closes with mouse or keyboard. |
Apps can also add their own blocks to the Custom section.

custom.preorder | True or false | Shows Pre-order on the add button even when the variant is in stock |
custom.preorder_message | Single line text | Replaces the pre-order note for this product |
Variants set to Continue selling when out of stock also show Pre-order when their stock is zero or below.
Media
Products can have images, uploaded videos, YouTube/Vimeo videos and 3D models. 3D models show View in your space on devices that support AR. When a shopper picks a variant with its own image, the gallery moves to it. Add alt text to every image in the product’s media.
Product bundles
Bundles show a “Frequently bought together” offer on the product pages of every product in the bundle. Shoppers can untick items, see the bundle total and add everything in one click.
1. Create the Bundle metaobject definition
- In the Shopify admin, go to Settings → Metafields and metaobjects → Metaobject definitions → Add definition.
- Name it Bundle. The type (handle) must be
bundle. - Add these fields:
| Field key | Type | Required | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
name | Single line text | Yes | Shown in the cart confirmation |
products | Product (list of products) | Yes | Two or more products |
discount_type | Single line text | No | percentage (default) or fixed |
discount_value | Integer | No | Percent (e.g. 10) or, for fixed, an amount in cents (1500 = 15.00) |
heading | Single line text | No | Overrides Theme settings → Features → Default bundle heading |
- Under Options, turn on Storefronts access.
2. Add bundles
Go to Content → Metaobjects → Bundle → Add entry and fill in the fields. A product can be in more than one bundle; all of them show on its page.
Add the Product bundles section to your product template if it isn’t there, and make sure Theme settings → Features → Show product bundles on product pages is on.
3. Make the discount real at checkout
Themes can show a bundle price but can’t change what checkout charges. To charge the bundle price, create an automatic discount for each bundle:
- Go to Discounts → Create discount → Amount off products and choose Automatic discount.
- Set the value to the bundle’s saving (the same percent or amount as the bundle’s
discount_typeanddiscount_value). - Under Applies to, pick the bundle’s products. A collection that holds only the bundle’s products makes this easier.
- Under Minimum purchase requirements, require a minimum quantity of items equal to the number of products in the bundle.
Shopify applies the discount by itself when the cart qualifies; the shopper doesn’t enter a code, and the theme doesn’t apply one. The cart and checkout then show the bundle saving.
Important:
- Keep the bundle’s
discount_typeanddiscount_valuethe same as the automatic discount, so the price on the product page matches checkout. - Test each bundle once with a real cart: add the whole bundle and check the saving in the cart.
How the price is shown
- Bundle total = sum of each product’s selected variant price, minus the discount.
- The discount only shows when every product in the bundle is in stock.
Back-in-stock alerts
When a variant is sold out, the product page shows a “Get an email when this is back in stock” form with a Notify me button (Buy buttons block → Show back-in-stock signup on sold-out variants, on by default).
What the form does
The form uses Shopify’s customer form. Submitting it creates the customer if needed, with email marketing consent, and adds three tags:
| Tag | Example | Use |
|---|---|---|
back-in-stock | back-in-stock | Everyone who asked for any alert |
back-in-stock-<variant ID> | back-in-stock-50604979028038 | People waiting for that variant |
product-<handle> | product-the-complete-snowboard | People waiting for any variant of that product |
Find the variant ID in the admin URL when you open the variant (…/variants/<ID>).
Shoppers who already have a customer account are tagged too; Shopify merges the tags into their existing customer record. (This is listed as KI-014 and is checked during the Phase 9 test pass; see the note at the end.)
Send the alerts with Shopify Flow
The theme collects sign-ups; sending the email is done in the admin. One way with the free Shopify Flow app:
- Create a workflow that starts when inventory quantity changes for a product variant.
- Add a condition: the previous quantity was 0 or less and the new quantity is above 0.
- Add an action that gets customer data, with the query
tag:'back-in-stock-{{productVariant.legacyResourceId}}'. - For each customer found, send a marketing email (Shopify Email) or add them to an email segment, with a link to the product.
- Optionally remove the customer tag
back-in-stock-<variant ID>so they aren’t emailed again next time.
Trigger, condition and action names can differ slightly between Flow versions; pick the closest match. You can also send a Shopify Email campaign by hand to the customer segment customer_tags CONTAINS 'back-in-stock-<variant ID>'.
This Flow recipe hasn’t been run end to end on a live store as part of theme testing. Test it with your own email address before relying on it.
Accessibility
Foundry is built to meet WCAG 2.1 level AA. What the theme does:
- A Skip to content link is the first thing keyboard users reach.
- Every control works with a keyboard and shows a visible focus outline.
- The cart drawer, quick view, image zoom, popups and age verifier keep focus inside while open, close with Escape (except the age verifier, which needs an answer), and return focus to the button that opened them.
- Menus, predictive search, the slideshow, tabs, accordions, hotspots and the before/after slider have screen reader labels and keyboard support.
- Cart updates, search results and errors are announced to screen readers.
- All animation, auto-rotation and smooth scrolling stop for shoppers who ask their device to reduce motion. Nothing is hidden when JavaScript is off.
- Every default color scheme in every theme style meets 4.5:1 contrast for text, buttons and accent text.
What to check in your own content:
- Add alt text to product images, section images and logos. Leave it empty only for purely decorative images.
- Keep custom colors readable: text, accent and button label colors need a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 with their background. Free contrast checkers are easy to find online.
- Use headings in order: one main heading per page (the first hero or slideshow provides it on the home page), then H2, then H3.
- Fill in the Slideshow description and Video description settings.
- Avoid text inside images; put it in the section’s text fields instead.
- Leave slideshow and announcement rotation off unless you need it.
FAQ
How do I switch theme style after installing?
Open the theme editor, select Theme settings → Theme style and choose Foundry, Foundry Temper or Foundry Quench. Switching replaces your fonts, colors and shape settings, so do it before fine-tuning.
Why don’t I see the country or language selector?
They only appear when the store sells to more than one country (Settings → Markets) or has more than one published language (Settings → Languages), and when the selector is turned on in the Header or Footer section.
Why don’t filters show on my collection pages?
Filters come from the free Shopify Search & Discovery app. Install it, add filters (availability, price, product type, vendor, options), and check that Show filters is on in the Collection section.
The free shipping bar shows the wrong amount
Enter the threshold in cents in Theme settings → Cart → Free shipping threshold: 5000 means 50.00 in your store currency. It should match the free-shipping rate in Settings → Shipping and delivery.
A bundle shows a discount, but checkout charges full price
Themes can’t change prices at checkout. Create an automatic discount in Discounts that matches the bundle; see Product bundles.
How do I send back-in-stock emails?
The theme collects sign-ups as tagged customers. Send the emails with Shopify Flow or Shopify Email; see Back-in-stock alerts.
Can I edit the theme code?
Yes, but duplicate your theme first (Online Store → Themes → … → Duplicate) and work on the copy. Code changes aren’t covered by support and are lost when you update to a new version; consider hiring a Shopify Partner for custom work.
How do I update Foundry?
When a new version is released, Shopify shows an update notice on Online Store → Themes. Updating adds a new copy of the theme with your settings and content; preview it, then publish it.
